The United Kingdom and the United States have agreed to a landmark trade agreement that will maintain zero duties on British pharmaceutical products being sold in the American market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to raise funding on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This move ensures that tariffs on these crucial products will remain at nothing for a period of the next three years.

This deal comes after recent statements to dramatically increase import taxes on patented drug imports, with increases floated reaching double the cost.

"This agreement between the United Kingdom strengthens the worldwide climate for new treatments and brings much-needed balance to transatlantic pharmaceutical trade," an announcement noted.

Economic Importance

Pharmaceuticals are one of the Britain's biggest goods shipped to the America, which is clearly the largest market for major British pharmaceutical firms.

Export figures show that in the year to the end of last September, the UK shipped drugs valued at billions to the US. This amount accounted for a significant portion of all goods exports in that period.

"This agreement secures work, stimulates capital expenditure and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a global hub for life sciences," a government official commented.

Key NHS Changes

The agreement includes several key pledges from the British government:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will raise the affordability limit at which it judges new medicines to be too expensive by 25%.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a goal to increase total health service expenditure on drugs from 0.3 percent of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6% over the coming ten years.
  • Payback Limit: The amount manufacturers must pay back to the NHS to control costs will be restricted at 15%. Last year, repayments topped twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

The pact comes amid a protracted dispute between the pharmaceutical industry and the UK government over spending levels and NHS adoption.

The disagreement were heightened by assertions that US customers were charged significantly more for the equivalent treatments than patients in the UK and Europe.

Over the last 18 months, several significant drug company projects in the UK have been paused or cancelled, while multi-billion-dollar investments have been directed toward US facilities.

One official publicly accepted that the NHS needed to increase expenditure on medicines, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had declined as a percentage of its total funding over the past decade.
