Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
