One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month break until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime had a six-month pause that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to supply viewers with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments appeared during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the news, this may result in a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with others instead covering one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of production, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Today, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple at most releasing each annually, allowing for improved visuals and more faithfulness to the original work.
