The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
